PRESENTED BY SCREEN NEXT THE SEA

At Alderman Peel High School,

Market Lane, Wells NR23 1RB

Directed by Michael Showalter and starring Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Karan, Holly Hunter & Ray Romano

Do not be put off by the title of this rom com;  it is a fictionalised version of a real life episode in the life of its co-authors, one of whom (Nanjiani) plays a version of himself as the male lead.  His wife and co-writer, named Emily in the film, is played by Zoe Karan.  Kumail is a “lapsed Muslim”, a would-be stand up comedian, currently working as an Uber driver, who is constantly fighting off his mother’s attempts to produce suitable brides for him.  Meanwhile, he is developing a relationship with Emily , a graduate student training to be a therapist. When Emily becomes seriously ill and is in a coma, the extended families become involved and the film morphs into an ensemble piece in which they are the real focus.  This is a funny, sharp and unsentimental film based on real life.

PUCCINI'S TOSCA - LIVE FROM THE MET New Production

PUCCINI'S TOSCA - LIVE FROM THE MET New Production

PRESENTED BY SCREEN NEXT THE SEA

at Alderman Peel High School,

Market Lane, Wells NR23 1RB

Conductor: Emmanuel Villaume

Puccini’s thrilling Tosca is a story of love, terror, the abuse of power, and the unquenchable longing for freedom. When an escaped political prisoner takes refuge in a church, an opera singer and a painter are drawn into a twisting plot that puts them at the mercy of the secret police and its network of torturers and spies. Rivalling the splendour of Franco Zeffirelli’s Napoleonic-era sets and costumes, Sir David McVicar’s ravishing new production offers a splendid backdrop for extraordinary singing. Kristine Opolais stars as the titular prima donna, alongside Vittorio Grigolo as her artist lover and Zeliko Lucic as the villainous police chief.

"Please note Bryn Terfel is no longer singing this role."

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN is thrilled to present this film of one of the most talked-about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before travelling to London and Washington.

One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least-known of all the impressionists – until now.

Directed by Phil Grabsky.

THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM UK (15)

THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM UK

PRESENTED BY SCREEN NEXT THE SEA

At Alderman Peel High School,

Market Lane, Wells NR23 1RB

Directed by Juan Carlos Medina and starring Bill Nighy, Olivia Cooke, Douglas Booth, Eddie Marsan, Henry Goodman & Sam Reid

“A gothic Victorian East End melodrama, splendidly adapted from a 1994 novel by Peter Ackroyd. A tale of theatrical murder drenched in the rich hues of classic-period Hammer.” Mark Kermode, The Observer.

A serial killer stalks the Limehouse streets of Victorian London in 1880, and the terrified population of this squalid district of the East End believe that the “Golem”,a monster fromJudiac mythology is responsible.

Inspector Kildare (Nighy) is given the impossible task of solving these heinous crimes and his investigations lead him on a race across the capital from the Old Bailey, to Newgate Prison, to the music halls of London and the British Museum. His chief suspects are music hall superstar Dan Leno, political agitator Karl Marx, writer and philosopher George Gissing and journalist John Cree. Kildare believes that the famed music hall performer Little Lizzie Cree, who is almost certainly destined to hang for the poisoning of her husband, holds the key to the identity of the real Golem.

All is not what it seems, everyone is a suspect and everyone has a secret

“THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM may be hokum but it’s glorious hokum that brings something fresh to the stale old cadaver of Victorian melodrama” Patrick Smith,  The Telegraph.
