PUCCINI’S LA BOHÈME- LIVE FROM THE MET

PRESENTED BY SCREEN NEXT THE SEA

at Alderman Peel High School

Market Lane,Wells NR23 1RB

Conductor: Marco Armiliato

The world’s most popular opera returns with an exciting young cast in Franco Zeffirelli’s legendary production. Poverty-stricken poet Rodolfo and his artist friends eke out a precarious existence in bohemian Paris, alternately practising their art, laughing, quarrelling, dodging the landlord, and living it up in their local cafe. When Rodolfo meets the delicate Mimì, the pair instantly fall in love. But Mimì is ill, Rodolfo is jealous, and their romance is doomed from the start. Opera superstars Sonya Yoncheva and Michael Fabiano play the heart-breaking couple, singing two sublime Puccini favourites—“Sì, mi chiamano Mimì” and “Che gelida manina.” Zeffirelli’s stupendous onstage recreations of 19th-century Paris are sure to take your breath away. Susanna Phillips reprises the role of the flirtatious Musetta and Lucas Meachem sings the role of her lover, the painter Marcello

PRESENTED BY SCREEN NEXT THE SEA

at Alderman Peel High School,

Market Lane, Wells NR23 1RB

Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles

Directed by Maysaloun Hamoud and starring Shaden Kanboura,Sana Jammelieh,Mouna Hawa Riyad Sliman & Mahmoud Shalaby.

Told through the wry, amusing exploits of three young women, this stunning award-winning debut by young Palestinian writer/director Maysaloun Hamoud peels back the layers of an Arab-Israeli underground culture.

In Between is beautifully crafted, compelling and skilfully understated. The cast (about 90% of whom are in front of the camera for the first time) are so good. It depicts female relationships in the modern era  as it follows lawyer Laila (Mouna Hawa), aspiring DJ Salma (Sana Jammaliah) and student and wife-to-be Nour (Shaden Kanboura) as their lives begin to take shape. Each woman knows what she wants away from the constraints of traditional society, but as they pursue their paths, do they have the freedom from their friends, families and even each other, to succeed?

After being criticised for taking Israeli state funding, the director found herself the subject of death threats and fatwas from fundamentalists, accused of disparaging or corrupting Muslim women. Elsewhere,In Between has been rapturously received, with Hamoud receiving the Women in Motion Young Talents award at this year’s Cannes festival.

SAM PEEL, A MAN WHO DID DIFFERENT

SAM PEEL, A MAN WHO DID DIFFERENT

PRESENTED BY WELLS MALTINGS TRUST

at Alderman Peel High School,

Market Lane, Wells NR23 1RB

The play is written by Robin McLoughlin, based on the book by Susan Wild

Set against the backdrop of the early 1900s, this play tells the story of Sam Peel, the son of a Norfolk railway worker, who, motivated by a strong Quaker faith, carved a place in the history of the town and county.

It tracks his life through the early, stormy years of his life in Wells-next-the-sea, when opposition to his efforts to confront a range of social injustices were met with hostile, and at times, violent opposition. The play tells of protests and setbacks, struggles and victories, as Sam fought to introduce the benefits of a new century to a town untouched by its arrival.

The story continues through the first half of the twentieth century, as Sam's willingness to 'do different' in order to make a difference, transformed the lives of many throughout Norfolk.

The Classic Film

Directed by  Orson Welles and starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton, Dorothy Comingore, Agnes Moorehead & Everett Sloane

Given extraordinary freedom by Hollywood studio RKO for his debut film, boy wonder Orson Welles created a modern masterpiece that is regularly voted among the best films ever made.  It presents a fictionalised version of one of America’s most powerful men in the 1930’s and 40’s – press baron William Randolph Hearst – in the shape of Charles Foster Kane (played by Welles himself), who decides to start a newspaper with his inherited money.  As its fortunes rise and rise and Kane becomes more and more powerful at the head of his newspaper empire, the corrupting effects of his power start to emerge.  From the opening shots of his mansion Xanadu at night the film is packed with visual imagination and invention;  shot in crisp black and white, it was way ahead of its time and still speaks to us today about power and how it can corrupt.
