A STREET CAT NAMED BOB UK 2016
PRESENTED BY SCREEN NEXT THE SEA
at Alderman Peel High School, Market Lane, Wells NR23 1 RB

Directed by Roger Spottiswoode and starring LukeTreadaway, Rita Gedmintas and Joanne Froggatt
This film is based on the best selling autobiography of the former busker and recovering drug addict James Bowen (Luke Treadaway, who played the lead, Christopher, in the National Theatre's production of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHTTIME). In a last ditch attempt to help James get clean, his support worker Val (Froggart) moves him into a flat, where he is joined (?persecuted) by a stray cat who he names Bob. The pair quickly bond, and gradually Bob starts to transform James's life. As he scrapes a living busking in Covent Garden and selling the Big Issue, Treadaway's sensitive and affecting performance is without vanity and so convincing that you feel he is just like any number of young men struggling on the streets of London - or Norwich. Bob (and his lookalikes) is full of character and turns out to be James's saviour. "Charming and life affirming".Henry Fitzherbert, Daily Express

A UNITED KINGDOM UK/USA 2016
PRESENTED BY SCREEN NEXT THE SEA
at Alderman Peel High School, Market Lane, Wells NR23 1 RB

Directed by Amma Asante and starring Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo and Tom Felton
This film reminds us of a long-forgotten chapter of British history; a tale of imperialism and hypocrisy, class and racial prejudice in post-war Britain. South Africa had introduced apartheid and its neighbour Bechuanaland (now Botswana) had sent its Prince Seretse Khama (Oyelowo) to study law in London. There he met, fell in love with and married a white office worker called Ruth Williams (Pike). At that time, Britain was actively supporting its Commonwealth member's apartheid regime;Bechuanaland was a British protectorate. This inter-racial marriage was fiercely opposed both by their own families and by the governments of the countries involved. The chemistry between the couple on screen, while decorous and of its time is totally convincing and moving.
